You might think getting banned or losing your account credentials is one of the worst things that can happen to any gamer. Losing all that hard-earned progress and are reset back to square one. However, at least those can be avoided, if you’re careful. Apex players recently encountered a bug after the recent Apex Legends update, that reset their accounts without any warning.
On April 2nd, many players woke up to find their account completely reset with zero progression. This included ranked progress, in-game cosmetics, and even their win-loss statistics. Players quickly took to Reddit and X to inform Respawn Entertainment of this disastrous glitch.
As expected, the Apex Legends subreddit was quickly flooded with news about the account reset glitch with people losing all their Apex Legends characters and being unable to play. Even though the issue did not extend to the Apex Legends shop or affect the Apex coins price, players were saddened at the loss of hundreds of hours of gameplay gone to waste.
Respawn did address the issue as soon as it flared up, instilling a sense of tolerance within the community as they checked out the issue. The issue arose after the new Apex update that introduced cross-progression into the game.
Did the Cross-Progression Update Lead to the Game Crash?
Since Respawn had just rolled out the cross-progression new Apex update, many quickly called out the lack of proper development and coding. While it wasn’t confirmed that the Apex Legends update was what caused the account resets, a connection could easily be formed.
After trying to calm down their player base, Respawn issued a hotfix to resolve the issue and give players their account progress back. They also temporarily postponed the new ranked split in order to give everyone a fair chance at ranking up.
Apex Legends Community Shows Loss of Confidence In Developer and Support Team
The account reset bug could not come at a worse time for Apex Legends as the game had had a difficult year already. Previously, a match in the game’s professional scene, ALGS NA Pro League, was hacked. Pro players, TSM Imperialhal and DZ Genburton, were hacked and received in-game cheats that allowed them to effortlessly cruise through to victory.
When TSM Imperialhal noticed this, he quickly left the lobby to look into the issue. Soon after, he received a ban notification, which caused a controversy on its own. Players were quick to point out how a professional league match could be hacked so easily and why the player received a ban even though it wasn’t his fault.
In other news, the Apex Legends team at Respawn also faced layoffs in March 2024. With an already-declining game state, the Apex Legends player count is bound to see a drop as players just don’t trust the support team anymore. Some players went as far as to say they put their Apex accounts for sale and decided to quit the game permanently.
Whether Respawn Entertainment can bounce back from this setback and stabilize themselves once again is yet to be seen as they prepare for their massive Breakout Apex Legends update coming soon.
