When discussing electronics and electrical engineering, you may have come across the term fuse used widely. The fuse is the type of protective device used in electrical supply whose function is to safeguard electric circuits from high and over current ranges.

Due to modernisation, now we have numerous fuse designs where each type has its features based on the usage of the application. Amongst that, the most widely used fuse is the HRC fuse. Read on further to understand what HRC fuses are and where it is used.

    What Are HRC Fuses?

HRC is an abbreviation used for High Rupturing Capacity Fuse. These fuse wires carry a short circuit current in a set period.

The HRC fuses are often made of glass, but other materials are also used. These fuses can also be constructed using various chemical compound mixtures, mainly depending on multiple factors. The outer compartment of HRC fuses needs to be completely airtight where it eliminates atmosphere interaction with the fuse components.

HRC fuse is consistent because if the faults have a high current, break time is low. Similarly, the break time is longer if the fault current is low.

It also holds the current carefully for a corresponding period. So, when the fault is detached, it will not get blown. However, when it is not removed, it melts the circuit and removes it from the power supply. So, if the fault occurs in the circuit, it blows off. And due to this, the circuit remains in a safe condition.

    Advantages of Using HRC Fuses

Using HRC fuses provides you with several advantages. A few of these advantages are as follows-

    • Cost-effective as they are cheaper compared with other types of electrical appliances
    • Simple and easy to design
    • Maintenance not required
    • High breaking capacity
    • Consistent performance
    • Easy to operate
    • Its characteristic of inverse time is suitable for overload protection

    Where is HRC Fuses Used?

A few of the applications of HRC fuses are as follows-

    • HRC fuses to protect the circuit from short circuit conditions in high-rated voltage switchgear.
    • It is employed as a backup safety
    • Utilised for protection of electrical devices like motors, transformers, automobiles, and many others.
    • Implementation in stators of motor

These high rupturing capacity fuses are up to 115,000 volts AC on electrical power systems. High-voltage fuses are used to protect instrument transformers for electricity metering. It is also used for small power transformers where the expense of a circuit breaker is not under warranty. For example, a circuit breaker at 1,15,000 volts may cost you five times more than a set of power fuses. So, these fuses can save you lakhs of money.

Whereas, for a medium-voltage distribution system, an HRC fuse is used for protecting a transformer serving up to 3 houses. These fuses can also protect motors, capacitor banks and transformers, and it also may be mounted in metal-enclosed switchgear or on open switchboards. Visit Indoasian.
