How to Know if You Have Termites

Termites are one of the most common pests found in homes. They can cause serious damage to your home, which makes it important to know how to spot termites and what to do if you suspect that they have infested your house.

In this article, you will find out how you can tell if there are signs of termites in your home and what treatment options are available for them if you do find them. You’ll also go over ways to prevent them from returning and damaging your property in the future.

You see swarming insects inside the house

If you notice swarming insects inside your house, that’s one of the signs of termites. But these are harder to spot than their damage—you’ll only see them if you look in the right place. Swarming is a termite’s way of reproducing and creating new colonies. So if you see some of these creatures in or near your home, there’s probably a colony somewhere nearby too.

The good news is that swarming insects are easy to identify as long as you know what to look for: they’re small (about half an inch), brownish-black and have wings. The bad news is that they’re also pretty tiny—and flying around your living room or kitchen isn’t always easy to spot!

There are piles of wings in places like window sills and along the baseboard

If you find a lot of these little bugs in certain areas of your house, it’s a sign that you may have termites. As mentioned above, termites shed their wings when they get too big and can’t support their weight anymore. You can spot them underneath window sills or around the baseboard where there was a lot of activity.

There are mud tunnels inside the home

You may see mud tunnels in your home if you have termites. Termites eat wood, leaving mud tunnels to get from one place to another. Most often, these are found near the baseboards and flooring. It’s not always easy to spot these worm-like tracks because they can be very thin, but if you do notice them, it is a sign that there are termites nearby.

The best way to prevent damage from termites is by checking for them regularly. For example, if you notice any small holes in the wall or flooring where there used to be none before (especially around windows), take action immediately so that infestations don’t spread throughout your property.

There is a hollow sound when you tap wood flooring or walls

    • If you hear a hollow sound when you tap wood flooring or walls, it could be an indicator of termites. However, this is not always the case. Tapping can be misleading because other problems, such as rot in your home, can also cause the same sound – but only termites will continue to eat into your home until they are destroyed.
    • If there is no sound when you tap the wooden area, then that’s another good indication that there are no termites in the area being tapped and, therefore, no need for treatment at this time.

There are many signs of termites in your home, but the most visible is the damage they can cause. If you see any of these signs, call a professional immediately. You can also get a free inspection from a local exterminator by visiting their website or calling them directly for more information!
